Imperial Japan
Meiji-era military power
Imperial Japan refers to Japan during its period as an empire, roughly 1868–1947, when the emperor held formal sovereignty and the nation pursued aggressive military expansion.
The term most often evokes the militarist era from the 1930s through World War II: the invasion of China, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and brutal occupations across Asia.
Imperial Japan's defeat ended with atomic bombs and unconditional surrender.
