Ostia
Ancient harbor ruins
Ostia was the ancient port city of Rome, located at the mouth of the Tiber River.
Now an archaeological site, it preserves remarkably intact ruins of Roman apartments, baths, temples, and warehouses: We spent a day exploring the ruins at Ostia Antica.
The name comes from the Latin word for mouth or opening. (Lowercase ostia is the anatomical plural of ostium.)
