Tyre
Ancient Lebanese seaport
Tyre is an ancient Phoenician city on the coast of modern Lebanon, once a major Mediterranean trading power.
Famous for its purple dye extracted from sea snails, Tyre appears frequently in biblical texts and classical history: the merchants of Tyre.
The city was besieged by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE. (Lowercase tyre is the British spelling for a wheel covering.)
