Nanking

China's former capital

Nanking is an older romanization of Nanjing, a major city in eastern China.

The spelling appears in historical contexts, particularly the Nanking Massacre (1937-38), when Japanese forces killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers.

The Treaty of Nanking (1842) ended the First Opium War.

Modern usage generally prefers Nanjing.
