drum tower

Rhythmic signal structure

A drum tower is a traditional Chinese architectural structure, typically a large pavilion housing a massive drum used historically to mark time, signal curfews, or warn of emergencies.

Drum towers often stand paired with bell towers in Chinese cities: The ancient drum tower still dominates the old quarter.

The term also refers to cylindrical defensive towers in fortifications.
