Nanking Massacre
1937 Japanese atrocity
The Nanking Massacre was the mass killing and rape of Chinese civilians by Japanese troops following the capture of Nanking (now Nanjing) in December 1937.
Over six weeks, soldiers murdered an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people and raped tens of thousands of women.
The event remains a source of tension between China and Japan, where some deny or minimize its scale.
