Moltke

German military mastermind

Moltke refers to two influential Prussian military strategists.

Helmuth von Moltke the Elder (1800–1891) was chief of the Prussian General Staff and architect of victories in the wars that unified Germany.

His nephew, Helmuth von Moltke the Younger (1848–1916), held the same position at the outbreak of World War I.

The elder Moltke is remembered for the observation that no plan survives contact with the enemy.
