Frederick the Great
Enlightened Prussian king
Frederick the Great was the King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786, remembered for military conquests that transformed Prussia into a major European power and for his patronage of arts and Enlightenment philosophy.
He appears in discussions of military strategy and "enlightened despotism"—the idea that an absolute monarch might govern rationally and benevolently: Frederick the Great corresponded with Voltaire.
