Napoleon III
France's final emperor
Napoleon III (1808–1873) was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte.
He came to power through a coup d'état after serving as the first president of the French Republic.
His reign modernized Paris and expanded French influence abroad, but ended in defeat during the Franco-Prussian War.
References to Napoleon III often invoke ambitious but ultimately failed leadership: He fancied himself a Napoleon III, dreaming of empire while his actual domain crumbled.
