Austronesian refers to a vast family of languages spoken across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, from Madagascar to Hawaii, Taiwan to New Zealand.

The family includes Malay, Tagalog, Hawaiian, and Maori, among hundreds of others.

As a noun, an Austronesian is a member of any of the peoples who speak these languages: Austronesian seafarers settled islands across thousands of miles of open ocean.
