downwinders

Nuclear test casualties

Downwinders are people living in areas exposed to radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons testing or nuclear facilities.

The term originated with communities downwind of U.S. test sites in Nevada, whose residents suffered elevated rates of cancer and other illnesses: The downwinders finally received federal compensation decades later.

The word now applies to anyone similarly affected by airborne nuclear contamination.
