Gang of Four

Post-Mao political prisoners

Gang of Four refers most often to the four Chinese Communist Party officials blamed for the Cultural Revolution's excesses, arrested after Mao's death in 1976.

The phrase has spread to describe any small faction wielding disproportionate power or blamed for institutional failures.

In software, the Gang of Four are the authors of an influential 1994 book on design patterns.
