Augusto Pinochet
Augusto Pinochet was a Chilean military dictator who seized power in a 1973 coup against elected president Salvador Allende and ruled until 1990.
His regime killed and tortured thousands of political opponents.
The name evokes military dictatorship, state terror, and—for some—anticommunist resolve: Pinochet-style disappearances, He defended Pinochet's economic reforms.
