Lesbos

Northeastern Aegean island

Lesbos is a Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish coast.

It is the birthplace of the ancient poet Sappho, whose verses about love between women gave rise to the term lesbian.

The island has been a major point of arrival for refugees crossing from Turkey to Europe.

Also spelled Lesvos.
