ouzo

Anise spirit, Aegean

Ouzo is a Greek anise-flavored liquor, clear in the bottle but turning milky white when water or ice is added.

It is traditionally served as an aperitif, often alongside small dishes called meze.

The distinctive licorice taste comes from anise seed, though other herbs and spices may be included.

We ordered ouzo and olives at the taverna.
