Lesbian

From Sappho's island

A lesbian is a woman sexually and romantically attracted to other women.

The term comes from Lesbos, the Greek island where the poet Sappho wrote of love between women.

As an adjective, lesbian describes this orientation or things relating to it: lesbian relationships, the lesbian community.

The word is standard and neutral, preferred by many over vaguer terms like "gay woman."
