Irish Free State
Pre-republic Dublin government
The Irish Free State was the self-governing dominion established in 1922 after Ireland's war of independence from Britain, comprising 26 of Ireland's 32 counties.
Six northern counties remained part of the United Kingdom.
The state became the Republic of Ireland in 1949, shedding its formal ties to the British Crown.
