Republic of Ireland

Dublin's sovereign state

The Republic of Ireland is the official name of the sovereign state occupying most of the island of Ireland, distinct from Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

In casual usage, people often say simply Ireland or Éire (its Irish-language name).

The distinction matters in political and legal contexts: She holds a Republic of Ireland passport.
