IRA

Tax-deferred savings

An IRA is an Individual Retirement Account—a tax-advantaged savings plan for retirement in the United States.

Traditional IRAs defer taxes until withdrawal; Roth IRAs use after-tax contributions but grow tax-free: She maxed out her IRA contributions this year.

The IRA is also the Irish Republican Army, a paramilitary organization that fought for Irish independence and later for Northern Ireland's unification with the Republic: The IRA declared a ceasefire in 1994.

Context usually makes clear which meaning applies. (Capitalized Ira is a given name.)
