State
Governed political territory
State with a capital letter typically refers to a specific government or official body: the State Department, Secretary of State.
It may also designate a particular U.S. state when context is clear: State police pulled him over.
In political philosophy, the State means government as an institution: separation of church and State. (Lowercase state covers conditions, political units generally, and the verb.)
