Northern Ireland
UK's Irish portion
Northern Ireland is a constituent country of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern portion of the island of Ireland.
Established in 1921 when Ireland was partitioned, it comprises six counties that remained under British rule.
The region experienced decades of sectarian conflict between unionists (mostly Protestant, favoring British ties) and nationalists (mostly Catholic, seeking Irish reunification)—a period known as the Troubles.
She grew up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
