Indian elephant
Subcontinent's largest mammal
The Indian elephant is a subspecies of the Asian elephant, native to mainland Asia.
Smaller than African elephants, with smaller ears and a more domed head, Indian elephants have been domesticated for thousands of years for labor, warfare, and ceremony.
They remain culturally significant in South Asian religious traditions, particularly Hinduism.
