mastodon

Ice Age giant

A mastodon is an extinct elephant-like mammal that roamed North America during the ice age, distinguished from mammoths by its shorter legs, longer body, and cone-shaped teeth adapted for browsing rather than grazing.

The word sometimes appears figuratively for anything massive and prehistoric-seeming: a mastodon of a machine. (Capitalized Mastodon is the social media platform.)
