kraal

Fenced cattle pen

A kraal is an enclosure for livestock, particularly cattle or sheep, traditional to southern Africa.

The term extends to a village of huts surrounding such an enclosure, typically arranged in a circular pattern with the animal pen at the center.

The word comes from Afrikaans and reflects the pastoral traditions of peoples like the Zulu and Xhosa.

The cattle were driven into the kraal at nightfall.
