Hellespont

Troy's neighboring waters

The Hellespont is the ancient Greek name for the Dardanelles, the narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara.

The name appears in classical literature and mythology—Leander swam the Hellespont nightly to visit Hero, and Xerxes built a bridge of boats across it to invade Greece.

Modern usage is literary or historical: Byron swam the Hellespont in 1810, emulating Leander.
