North Star
Mariner's guiding light
The North Star is Polaris, the bright star located nearly at the celestial north pole.
Because it appears stationary while other stars rotate around it, travelers and sailors have used it for centuries to find true north.
The North Star figured prominently in American slave narratives as a symbol of freedom—escaping slaves followed it northward.
Frederick Douglass named his abolitionist newspaper The North Star. (Lowercase north star is a metaphor for any guiding principle.)
