historical marker
Commemorative roadside plaque
A historical marker is a sign or plaque installed at a site of historical significance, typically placed by government agencies or preservation societies.
These markers briefly describe what happened at the location—a battle, a notable person's birthplace, the site of a first settlement: We pulled over to read the historical marker about the old mill.
The term sometimes extends to any physical commemoration of local history.
