Haleakala
Hawaiian shield volcano
Haleakala is a massive shield volcano forming the eastern portion of Maui, Hawaii.
The name means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, from a legend about the demigod Maui lassoing the sun at its summit.
The volcano's crater—actually an erosional depression—is a major tourist destination and national park: We watched the sunrise from Haleakala.
