Mauna Loa

Massive Pacific peak

Mauna Loa is a massive shield volcano on the island of Hawaii, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Its name means "long mountain" in Hawaiian, describing its elongated profile.

Rising about 13,700 feet above sea level and extending far below the ocean surface, it ranks among the largest volcanoes by volume.

Eruptions periodically threaten nearby communities: Lava from Mauna Loa reached within miles of Hilo.
