Mount Pinatubo

1991 eruption site

Mount Pinatubo is a volcano in the Philippines that erupted catastrophically in 1991—the second-largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century.

The eruption killed hundreds, displaced millions, and ejected enough ash and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere to cool global temperatures for several years.

The name now evokes sudden, large-scale geological disaster.
