Georgian architecture

Eighteenth-century British style

Georgian architecture is the dominant British building style from roughly 1714 to 1830, spanning the reigns of the four King Georges.

It features symmetrical facades, classical proportions, sash windows, and restrained ornamentation drawn from Greek and Roman models.

The style spread throughout the British Empire, shaping colonial American buildings: a Georgian brick townhouse, Georgian doorways with fanlights.

In the American South, grand Georgian plantation houses preceded the later Greek Revival style.
