Column capital curl
A volute is a spiral or scroll-shaped form, especially the ornamental scrolls at the corners of Ionic and Corinthian column capitals in classical architecture.
The term extends to any tight spiral structure: the volute of a snail shell, the volute of a violin's scroll.
As an adjective, volute describes things having a spiral form.
