swag

Freebies at conventions

Swag has branched into several distinct meanings.

Originally it referred to a decorative fabric draping in loops, or to stolen goods and plunder.

In Australian English, a swag is a bedroll or bundle of belongings carried by a traveler.

The word took on new life in hip-hop culture to describe a confident, stylish manner of carrying oneself: He walked in with serious swag.

More recently, swag refers to promotional merchandise and freebies, especially at corporate events: The conference swag included tote bags and water bottles.
