geomancy

Dirt-dot fortune-telling

Geomancy is divination by interpreting patterns in earth, sand, or soil—traditionally by casting handfuls of dirt and reading the resulting shapes.

The term now extends to the Chinese practice of feng shui, which assesses how physical surroundings affect the flow of energy.

More loosely, geomancy covers any spiritual interpretation of landscape or terrain: The geomancy of the site suggested building the temple on the hillside.
