Chaos

Mythology's first state

In Greek mythology, Chaos is the primordial void or chasm from which everything emerged—the first of all beings, preceding even the gods.

Hesiod's Theogony describes Chaos as the dark, formless state before creation, from which Gaia (Earth) and other primordial forces arose.

The name has been adopted for various fictional characters and entities. (Lowercase chaos means disorder or confusion.)
