Demeter

Greek harvest deity

Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest, grain, and agriculture.

Her myth centers on the abduction of her daughter Persephone by Hades—Demeter's grief causing winter, her joy at Persephone's return bringing spring.

The Eleusinian Mysteries, ancient Greece's most important religious rites, were dedicated to her.

Demeter corresponds to the Roman goddess Ceres.
