ziggurat

Mesopotamian temple platform

A ziggurat is a massive terraced structure built in ancient Mesopotamia, rising in stepped levels toward a flat top.

These pyramid-like temples served as platforms for shrines to gods: The ziggurat at Ur still stands in modern Iraq.

The word sometimes describes any similar stepped architectural form.
