Diogenes
Lamp-bearing truth-seeker
Diogenes was a Greek philosopher of the fourth century BCE, founder of Cynic philosophy.
He lived in extreme poverty—legend has him dwelling in a barrel—and publicly rejected social conventions, wealth, and comfort.
When Alexander the Great offered him any favor, Diogenes reportedly asked only that Alexander stop blocking his sunlight.
His name evokes radical simplicity and contempt for materialism: He lived like Diogenes, owning nothing but what he could carry.
