Kemal Ataturk
Kemal Ataturk (1881–1938) was the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey.
A military commander who rose to prominence defending Gallipoli in World War I, he led the Turkish War of Independence and abolished the Ottoman sultanate.
His sweeping reforms—adopting the Latin alphabet, secularizing government, granting women's suffrage—aimed to modernize Turkey along Western lines. "Ataturk" means "Father of the Turks," a surname granted by the Turkish parliament in 1934.
