Chancery

Historic equity tribunal

Chancery refers to a court of equity, historically distinct from courts of common law, handling matters like trusts, estates, and injunctions.

In England, the Court of Chancery was notoriously slow and expensive until abolished in 1873.

Chancery also means a chancellor's office or position, or the offices of an embassy or consulate where official business is conducted.

In wrestling, to have someone in chancery is to hold their head under your arm—from the helpless position of litigants trapped in lengthy chancery proceedings.
