Scipio
Carthage's Roman conqueror
Scipio refers to two Roman generals of the same family who shaped Rome's rise to Mediterranean dominance.
Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE, ending the Second Punic War.
His grandson by adoption, Scipio Aemilianus, destroyed Carthage in 146 BCE.
The name appears in discussions of Roman military history and classical education: He fancied himself a Scipio, bringing civilization through conquest.
