Magdeburg

Saxony-Anhalt's capital

Magdeburg is a city in central Germany, capital of Saxony-Anhalt, situated on the Elbe River.

It was a major medieval trading center and later an important Protestant stronghold.

The city is associated with the Magdeburg hemispheres—a 17th-century experiment demonstrating atmospheric pressure using two bronze hemispheres that horses couldn't pull apart once air was pumped out.
