Rhineland

Western German region

The Rhineland is the region along the Rhine River in western Germany, historically significant as a borderland between Germanic and French territories.

Its remilitarization by Nazi Germany in 1936 violated the Treaty of Versailles and tested Allied resolve.

The term appears most often in historical contexts: Hitler's gamble in the Rhineland paid off when France failed to respond.
