Hesse

German state, centrally

Hesse is a state in west-central Germany, home to Frankfurt and its major financial center.

The name derives from a Germanic tribe, the Chatti.

Historically, Hesse comprised various principalities before unification.

Hermann Hesse, the German-Swiss novelist who wrote *Siddhartha* and *Steppenwolf*, shares the surname but took it from his family's origins in the region.
