Birch

White-barked forest tree

Birch is a deciduous tree with distinctive pale bark that often peels in papery layers.

The wood is hard and fine-grained, used for furniture and plywood.

A birch is also a bundle of birch twigs used for flogging—to birch someone is to beat them with such a rod, a punishment once common in British schools: The headmaster birched the boy for lying.
