Gauss

Number theory pioneer

Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was a German mathematician and physicist whose contributions span number theory, statistics, astronomy, and electromagnetism.

His name appears throughout mathematics and science: Gaussian distribution, Gaussian elimination, the gauss unit of magnetic flux.

Gauss is often ranked among the greatest mathematicians of all time. (Lowercase gauss is the unit of magnetic measurement.)
