sequoia

Towering California tree

A sequoia is a massive conifer native to California, among the largest and longest-lived organisms on Earth.

The giant sequoia grows in the Sierra Nevada mountains; the coast redwood, also called sequoia, lines the Pacific coast.

Both species can exceed 300 feet in height and live for thousands of years.

We stood at the base of a sequoia, feeling impossibly small.
