wintergreen

Aromatic forest groundcover

Wintergreen is a low-growing North American plant with aromatic leaves and red berries, or the sharp, minty flavor derived from it.

The distinctive taste—cool and slightly medicinal—appears in chewing gum, candies, and topical pain relievers: wintergreen mints, wintergreen oil.

The flavor comes from methyl salicylate, chemically related to aspirin.
