cork oak

Wine seal source

A cork oak is a Mediterranean evergreen tree whose thick, spongy bark is harvested to produce cork.

The bark can be stripped every nine to twelve years without killing the tree, making it a sustainable source of material for wine stoppers, flooring, and insulation.

Portugal and Spain contain the largest cork oak forests and dominate global cork production.
