Shia

Iran's dominant faith

Shia is the branch of Islam that holds that leadership of the Muslim community should have passed through the Prophet Muhammad's family, specifically through his son-in-law Ali.

Shia Muslims constitute a minority of Muslims worldwide but form majorities in Iran, Iraq, and Bahrain.

The term also refers to an adherent of this branch: a Shia cleric, the Shia of southern Lebanon.

Also spelled Shi'a; the adjective form is Shiite.
